Study Session: Beginners Punch Needling

Lize from City Sessions, a company offering a series of creative workshops aimed at calming the mind and re-energising the spirit, is hosting her first Study Session with us in March. If spending a Saturday afternoon working with your hands and connecting with like-minded people in a friendly and inviting environment ticks all your boxes, keep reading for details on the Beginners Punch Needle Workshop.

What is Punch Needling?

Essentially, it’s a form of embroidery worked with a tool called a punch needle – it’s also referred to as ‘Thread Painting’ given the wonderful detail that can be created. The process creates loops on the front of the fabric resulting in beautifully textured pieces that can be turned into wall hangings, rugs, pillows, bags, and more.

About the class

During the workshop, you’ll punch on a 30 x 30cm stretched monk’s cloth with a wooden punch needle and a wide selection of chunky yarn. You’ll learn what to consider when planning your punch needle design, how to prepare a no-slip embroidery hoop as well as how to stretch fabric, and how to use the punch needle tool. You’ll also be given pointers on how to create different effects as you use different colours and thicknesses of yarn to punch needle your custom design. There will be an array of different colours for you to choose from – pick a limited colour palette or go all out and include multiple colours. The finished piece is yours to keep and display on your wall in its hoop – we’ll also talk you through how to turn it into a cushion, a zipped pouch, a bag etc.
